Thanks to Vinny Salzillo for organizing Metatopia this past weekend. Pantheon Press got some great feedback on Fortune's Fool and some of the new things we're concocting for upcoming releases. We had some really great groups of people playing our games and some even hung our past the game's conclusion to help create some new characters. Loved to see the enthusiasm and hear their ideas as they stepped through the process. A great and awesome convention for sure.

Stratton
Speaks: Surprise Yourself
By Jay
Stratton, Lead Designer at Pantheon Press

Thirty
years ago, when I started as a gamemaster, I was
really a dungeon master. There’s a hallway with three doors - there’s
an
encounter behind each door. Since the goal was to explore the dungeon,
it
didn’t matter what the characters did; it was just a question of order.

But
when the adventures came out of the dungeon things
necessarily became more complicated. There was an infinite number of
‘doors’
and no way to control where the players went. My early failures
included
putting the crucial magic item in a certain building and having no clue
what to
do when the PCs didn’t GO there.

Next
step: clues! I started introducing hints and signs to
guide the players toward the necessary information. Like a border
collie, I
would herd them along the storyline. Of course, this could be
agonizing. My players
understandably wanted choice and freewill. I can remember hearing one
of my
players say, “Oh, good… We found the adventure.”

Somewhere along the way, like any
good GM, I realized that I
had to put the adventure in front of the players. Didn’t matter where
they went,
that’s where the adventure happened. This worked pretty well, for a
long time.
I would prepare maybe three ‘scenes’ and the party would ‘discover’
these
scenes almost regardless of their choices. I would even vary the order
or shape
of the scenes depending on PC action. I’ve heard this called ‘the
illusion of
choice’. This is SOP for a lot of GMs and it ain’t bad.

But
I am a hard core GM with hard core players and
eventually we needed more. The ‘illusion’ wasn’t enough. My players
needed real
freedom. Like Jonathan Livingston Seagull, my GMing style was forced to
evolve
to the next level. Gradually I learned to let the players truly
surprise me. I
stopped preparing moments and instead became more generically prepared
- for
anything.

So my admonition for
the Gamemaster:
Let the players surprise you. Surprise
them right back. Hell, surprise yourself.

Put
the camera on the PCs and make sure that they are truly
the focus of the story, not your prep work. If they do something
unexpected –
avoid a fight or scene or story moment – go with it and see what
happens! When
that safety net disappears and you have to rely solely on communal
storytelling, it’s thrilling.

Of course, this requires a very
different kind of prep. You
have to have a bigger sense of the campaign and your world, and you
have to
think quite fast on your feet. You also have to foster real player
investment.
They can’t just be ‘on an adventure’ they have to be fighting for their
lives!

Stealth and Perception

Stratton Speaks: Stealth and
Perception – One Roll Only!

Okay, this is tiny. Call it a pet peeve. I hate it when the GM gives
every player a perception roll to spot something hidden.

We are searching for a secret door – very well hidden. To find the
door, we have to roll a 17+ on a d20. Tough door, right? The odds
of finding it are only 20%. But when all five characters search, the
odds of at least 1 person rolling a 17+ climb to… over 67%!

This totally diminishes the fun of being the character good at
perception! You might roll bad this time, but it doesn’t matter, no
one’s counting on you!
There are four more characters with mediocre perception who can toss
out natural 17s and 19s. BORING!

I like a GM who gives a single roll to spot something. If it’s a
passive circumstance, ask the character with best perception for the
roll. If the party is actively searching for something, either give the
roll to the highest perception or to the character that takes the
initiative to start the search.

The opposite rule applies for stealth rolls. The thief, the elf, and
the halfling all sneak off to explore something. They leave the
noisy fighter and dwarf behind. After taking a back seat in countless
battles, this is the scouts’ chance to shine!

All three are really sneaky – succeeding their stealth rolls on 5+ on a
d20 (80%)! But when all three have to roll, the odds of at least one
failure climbs to about 50%. One of them is very likely to blow it,
and the scouts are humiliated once again, as the fighters and wizards
have to rush to their aid.

My GM rule of thumb: a chain is only as sneaky as its loudest link. In
matters of stealth, only the character with the worst stealth makes the roll.

Stratton Speaks: We Can’t All be

Wolverine

May, 2011

I have a favorite quote from the movie, Reservoir Dogs:

MR. PINK: Why can't we pick out our own colors?

JOE: I tried that once, it don't work. You get four guys

fighting over who's gonna be Mr. Black.

From Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, to Gotham City’s Batman,

to almost every character ever played by Clint Eastwood, the antihero is an

attractive and compelling icon. I mean, who doesn’t want to be this guy? Surly,

lethal, and (best of all), misunderstood?

The problem is, the antihero is only fun when he works alone

or when he is surrounded by people who care about his angst. He doesn’t work

when he’s teamed up with a bunch of other antiheroes! Can you imagine if the

Justice League was all Batmen? They’d sit around glowering at each other all

day, trying to think up terse exit lines!

As gamers we’ve all been in that party, right?

Jeff: I’m ‘Derth Darkblade’. I have no family, no

love, just my sword. While others take prisoners, I take lives.

Carl: Well, Derth, let me introduce ‘Gloomsmith

Joybane.’ He had a family, but they were killed before his eyes. Now he lives

to seek vengeance against-

Steve: Not so fast there Gloomy. Allow me to introduce

myself. I am Killer McKillerkill. I can’t even SPELL the word ‘prisoner’. My life

means nothing to me, so why should anyone else’s?

GM: Ummm… Okay,

well you guys meet in a bar and…

BORING!!!

For every Wolverine, you need at least one Cyclops. You need

that personality that represents the moral compass - someone who will say, “No!

If we kill him, then we’d be just as bad as him!”

Corny? Not if you go for it! A character that stands up for compassion?

optimism? love? It takes courage, but if you commit to it, it will NOT be

corny. And remember, ‘Good’ does not mean ‘Weak’. Your character will be even

more memorable if they back up their beliefs with decisiveness and action.

And here’s the fun fact. Because so many players are

attracted to the antihero, your legitimate hero will actually be the unique

one.

Stratton Speaks: Tavernless Gaming

“Okay: Gruffin Elderblade, Frego son of Flatulo, Mina Harkenbronte, and Tav
Darkcloak; you all meet in a tavern. Suddenly you are approached by a mysterious
stranger. The stranger looks you up and down and begins speaking. ‘My friends, I must
ask you for your help. My daughter has been kidnapped…’”

How many campaigns have started like this? Even as I type it, I feel a wave of nostalgia.
Suddenly I am back in middle school with my hearty ranger ready to journey into another
dungeon during school lunch period! But I am writing to suggest a better way, a more
mature way, maybe even a funner way: Tavernless Gaming!

Now this post is not about the virtues of abstemiousness, nor do I mean gaming groups
should actually avoid taverns themselves. Personally, I love beer! I also love taverns,
(because they have beer there). What I am really talking about is giving the players a
better way to invest in the campaign.

Instead of hiring the players to go do something, give them their own reason. If your
campaign is about rescuing a kidnapped daughter, cut out the middle man: make one of
the PCs the girl’s father! How much higher then, will the stakes be to rescue her?

“Okay, well what about the other 4 PCs, you may ask? They can’t all be the girl’s
father!” Totally fair point, my binging friend! There are two ways to handle this. First,
you can build relationships TO the PC who is the girl’s father. Could another PC be the
father’s brother or sister? Or an old war buddy who owes a favor? Could another PC even
be the missing girl’s Romeo-and-Juliet-esque beloved? Sure the father disapproves, but
they must set aside their grudge and work together to save her!

Second, you can create concurrent storylines to involve other PCs. Got a dark PC who
is a stranger and a foreigner? That character isn’t going to be happy being the brother or
buddy or boyfriend sworn to help. So give them another reason. Sure, this PC doesn’t
care about the poor kidnapped daughter, but he might be seeking vengeance on the
evil mastermind that took the girl. And he knows that he will never be able to exact his
revenge without help.

What about character background and freewill, you ask? Okay, this is a totally legit and
fair point. Work with the players when they make their characters – solicit willingness.
Find out if any of them is interested in being the girl’s father, or uncle, or boyfriend.
Often a player with a brand new character doesn’t have a strong idea. They may be
grateful for the guidance!

Taverns are good places to get beer, mead, maybe even a cup of mutton stew! But they
are poor places to create investment in a storyline. Instead of the tavern, let the campaign
start in the lives of your characters!

Last weekend I, Jason Keeley, ran a small two-session adventure at NerdNYC’s latest two-day Recess, and it was pretty darn successful. There was a minor hiccup when two of the players couldn’t make the second session, but we had some awesome replacement players. In fact, demand was high enough that I added a sixth player for that second session. Luckily, I had made a pregen earlier in the day for just such an occasion.

The scenario was called “The Countess of Blood.” We may be running a shortened version of it at this year’s GenCon, so I won’t spoil any of the plot. Here’s the general synopsis: The PCs are called upon by the Palantine of Hungary to extract a full confession from Countess Bathory, three years after she was placed under house arrest for torturing and murdering over 600 girls and young women. All based on historical fact!

The first day started with character creation, and I was a bit surprised by the characters generated. Given the above description and the fact that Bathory’s castle is in Transylvania, just at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, there wasn’t a Catholic in the bunch. We had two Jewish characters, two Moslem characters, and a wild occult orc from the wilderness. Sure, I never explicit told them to prepare for vampires, but I thought that the location and Bathory’s reputation would have been a giveaway.

Not that I’m saying the countess was a vampire in this scenario…

Also, it was surprising that it took a little less than an hour. Two of the players had made Fortune’s Fool characters before, in an earlier iteration. And another one was Jay Stratton, lead designer. But the other two hadn’t seen the game before and they picked it right up. Since they had copies of the game to look at, I attribute that to the excellent writing and layout of the character creation chapter.

I found it interesting, in particular, to watch Jay make a character, as I don’t think he has sat down to do so (for a game) since the book came out last year. He did pretty well, making a very lucky Jewish dwarf with mediocre stats and skills. He had 14 Fortune Shines! At one point, I was explaining to a first-timer the fact that you can alter your character’s Fate Structure a little by decreasing your Fate Pool or Burning Fortune (see pages 50-51 for specifics), when I heard Jay say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about that.” He then exercised that option by burning the Empress to increase his Fate Pool by 2, and then decreasing his Fate Pool by 1 to get another Fate Twist. Of course, by the end of the weekend, he had drawn the Empress at least once! I’m sure he doesn’t regret that decision, as those Fate Twists really helped out the group.

In the end, I’m tickled pink that this game still has the ability to delight and surprise us from time to time.

I am feverishly writing Grimm Tales – a campaign supplement for Fortune’s Fool. As
you can probably guess from the name, the campaign is inspired by the stories of the
Brothers Grimm. I have also given myself creative permission to include Hans Christian
Anderson and Mother Goose. Suddenly my writing is interrupted by an email from Rob
Trimarco. He wants a blog post on making faery tales and nursery rhymes creepy.

Making faery tales and nursery rhymes creepy? What could I say? A week earlier, Rob’s
character had watched Little Red Riding Hood’s Grandmother morph into a hideous wolf
creature – which ultimately tore out his throat.
Hmmm… maybe this assignment was revenge for losing a beloved character? Logical
but not Rob’s style.

To me, Faery Tales work on a subconscious level. We are never so vulnerable as when
we are at the mercy of our own darkest fears. We move to a place and comfort and safety,
but we know something is wrong – creatures live in the basement of our childhood home,
our mother is not to be trusted, and even our bedroom hides some black secret.

Faery Tales work like this. They lure us into womblike safety – then spring a trap. We
are sitting on our tuffet about to tuck into our favorite meal when a spider springs. Our
trusted old Grandmother is actually a wolf in a nightshift. We get home ready to crawl
into our ‘just right’ cozy bed and find a man-eating bear!

Rob wants to know how to make faery tales and nursery rhymes creepy? With a witch in
every inviting gingerbread house; a broken crown from an innocuous trip to the well; and
our mother replaced by an endless procession of evil stepmothers? I don’t know how to
make them NOT creepy…

Stratton Speaks: Why I Killed Rob

Rob is the president of Pantheon Press. I have been good friends with him for almost a
decade. He lets me park my motorcycle in the backyard of his house on Long Island. He
hosts awesome all-day gaming sessions at his place. So why would I kill this paragon of
the gaming world?

I had to.

We were playing Fortune’s Fool; an ongoing campaign I was running inspired by the
Grimm Fairy Tales. We were in our 6th session. We had been averaging five players a
session. And nobody had died. That’s 30 player character appearances without a death.

When it comes to PC death, there is no magic number, but I could tell the stakes were
falling. Playing RPGs is serious business. We tell life and death stories. We have fun til
somebody gets hurt. So when that 6th session started, I knew it had to get mean.

Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t target Rob. I didn’t cheat. I didn’t fudge. And it was entirely
possible that everyone could have survived that night. But when his wounded halfling
climbed out that window into the night with Little Led Riding Hood’s werewolf Grandma
prowling around, I was the one licking my chops. And the cards were on my side!

We were all sad when Rob died. Connor (his halfling) was a cool character and had been
with us from the beginning. I felt guilty, but I’ll tell you what. The next session, when
Goldilock’s three bears showed up, you better believe folks at our table were sitting up a
little straighter.

For mustache-twirling GMs out there reading this as permission for next week’s TPK,
I say, “Easy mister! Put the extra trolls back in the box and take a breath.” What we are
shooting for is high stakes, not broken spirits. Kill a character once in 5 adventures and
everyone will take things seriously. Kill a character every day and nobody will care –
they will not be able to invest.

Character death is a valuable GM tool, but it must be used sparingly. A little is good, but
too much is worse than none at all… well… almost.

There's another round of Fortune's Fool errata! We've decided to take something that's been a bit of house rule for us and make it official. And it all revolves around how the Tower works. We thought it was slowing down the game a bit, so we decided to change it. The majority of the new errata revolves around that change.

Just the other day, we received an e-mail from Pete, a Pennsylvania teacher who uses gaming of all sorts in his classroom to motivate and excite his students. He's also in charge of the school's gaming club, and while they don't have a ton of money to spend on games, they aren't short on enthusiasm. We encourage all of you fellow game designers out there: if you've got a spare copy or two of your game lying around, contact Pete and send it to him!
From time to time, Fortune's Fool lead designer Jay Stratton will speak his mind here on this blog. Today, his thoughts on a Fortune's Fool house rule that he's recently implemented:

"The Premonition and Hunch Fate Twists include the text “Keep this information to yourself.” Now that my gaming group is half a dozen sessions into an FF campaign, I have no idea why I wrote that!! I mean, Fate Twists are supposed to be totally meta! And what a stupid personal challenge it puts on the player who now knows about the cards and can’t say anything, but can grunt, moan, hint, or whatever. In my game, I am house-ruling this away, and if it serves you, I encourage you to do likewise. After a Hunch or Premonition, the players should feel free to reveal what they saw!"

If you are anything like us, you bought Paizo's Advanced Player's Guide at GenCon and immediately incorporated it into your Pathfinder game. Well, we were so inspired by all the new classes and class options, that we've been hard at work brainstorming ways to use the APG in the world of Nobis! Today, we present two new cavalier orders, tailored specifically for Nobis. In the weeks to come, check back here for our takes on the other classes: new oracle mysteries, inquisitor judgments, and witch hexes to name a few! And all free!

Order of the Sister

Cavaliers who join the order of the Sister respect the role death plays in life. They are dedicated to balance and bring mercy to those in need of death’s release. This may take the form of deposing mad kings who hold on to the last shreds of power at the cost of the lives of their subjects, combating vampires, liches, and other undead, or protecting a caravan of healers.

Edicts: The cavalier must worship Eun the Sister. The cavalier must maintain a balanced life and not indulge in excesses. The cavalier must assist those who are imperiled by corrupt masters. The cavalier must put a swift and merciful end to any being great or small who cannot be saved from undeath.

Challenge: Whenever an order of the Sister cavalier issues a challenge, he receives a +1 morale bonus on all Will saving throws as long as he is threatening the target of his challenge. This bonus increases by +1 for every three levels the cavalier possesses.

Skills: An order of the Sister cavalier adds Heal (Wis) and Knowledge (religion) (Int) to his list of class skills. An order of the Sister cavalier can make Knowledge (religion) skill checks untrained. If he or she has ranks in the skill, he receives a bonus on the check equal to ½ his cavalier level (minimum +1) as long as the check involves the undead.

Order Abilities: An order of the sister cavalier gains the following abilities as he increases in level.

Undeath’s Nemesis (Ex): At 2nd level, the cavalier can invoke the name of Eun the Sister as a swift action, filling him with divine energies, which imbues one of his weapons with the undead bane weapon special ability (+2 to hit and +2d6 damage). This ability only functions while the cavalier wields the weapon. If dropped or taken, the weapon resumes granting this ability if it is returned to the cavalier before the duration expires. This ability lasts for a number of rounds per day equal to ½ his cavalier level (minimum 1). These rounds do not need to be consecutive.

Blessing of the Sister (Ex): At 8th level, the cavalier can call upon Eun the Sister to bolster himself and his allies in combat. As a free action, the cavalier can call out to Eun The Sister, granting him a morale bonus on attack rolls equal to his cavalier level for 1 round. In addition, any allies within 30 feet that share his faith also receive half this bonus. The cavalier can use this ability once per day, plus one additional time per day at 12th level and every four levels thereafter.

Death’s Mercy (Ex): At 15th level, the cavalier can unravel the magics holding an undead creature to this world. One per day, as a standard action, the cavalier can strike the ground with his weapon and cause all undead creatures within a 40’ radius burst around him to be effected as the spell undeath to death. The Will save DC for this spell is 16 plus the cavalier’s Charisma modifier. The cavalier’s weapon then gains the broken quality. A broken weapon cannot be used to activate this ability.

Order of the Burning Sands

Cavaliers who join the order of the burning sands are exclusively Goreshi warriors who protect their land fiercely. They are usually of noble birth, but there are those knights who have risen through the ranks from a common background due to their unwavering commitment and battle prowess. Many serve in a military capacity during times of war as commanders and generals but many also travel to the lands outside of the Desert Kingdoms to seek out potential threats to their homelands and weed out evil at its source.

Edicts: The order of the burning sands cavalier must help any citizen in need, especially a Goreshi one. They must always strive to protect those who are downtrodden or oppressed. They must shun the use of Simplecraft, but if they travel with those who do (outside of the borders of Goresh) they are not banned from travelling with them.

Challenge: Whenever an order of the burning sands cavalier issues a challenge, it is fierce and often very overwhelming. He receives a +1 morale bonus on all Intimidation checks as long as the cavalier is engaged with the target of his challenge. This bonus increases by +1 for every three levels the cavalier possesses. In addition, the cavalier adds ½ his level (minimum 1) to any attempt to demoralize the target of his challenge.

Skills: An order of the burning sands cavalier adds Survival (Wis) and Knowledge (History) (Int) to his list of class skills. An order of the burning sands cavalier can make Knowledge (history) skill checks untrained. If he or she has ranks in the skill, he receives a bonus on the check equal to ½ his cavalier level (minimum +1) as long as the check involves Goresh or its peoples.

Order Abilities: An order of the burning sands cavalier gains the following abilities as he increases in level.

Swift Assault (Ex): At 2nd level, the cavalier can spur his mount as a swift action, causing it to become faster and more sure of foot. The mount can move an extra 20 feet during a single charge attack and is not affected by difficult terrain caused by shifting sand, dirt, stones or even ice or snow. He can use this ability a number of times per day equal to ½ his cavalier level (minimum 1).

Sands of Vengeance (Ex): At 8th level, the cavalier can, as a standard action, call upon the fallen of his order to stir up the winds and sands of the desert (regardless of the cavalier’s current geographic location), causing his foes to be affected as if caught in a sandstorm. All enemies in a 40 ft. radius burst from the cavalier suffer from 15’ reduced movement and a -4 on their attack rolls and Perception checks for a number of rounds equal to ½ the cavalier’s level. In addition, the cavalier and any allies in the radius of this effect are not affected by this storm and can attack, move, and see normally. The cavalier can use this ability once per day, plus one additional time per day at 12th level and every four levels thereafter.

Army of the Storm (Ex): At 15th level, the cavalier can inflame the spirit of the warrior within anyone who fights alongside him to heroic levels. Once per day, as a swift action, a cavalier of the burning sands can cause all allies who can hear his inspirational words to gain bonuses and speed increases as if they were under the effects of the haste spell. This effect lasts a number of rounds equal to the cavalier’s level.

We encourage you to game with your friends; it's what we do after all! But every once in a while, even if your group always gets along with one another, events conspire and one character tries to work against another character. Sometimes it's all in good fun, sometimes it isn't. It can be a tricky situation to resolve, especially when you are using a new system like Fortune's Fool. Fear not, as we present to you an excerpt from the rulebook that explains how you resolve such conflicts mechanically.

In Fortune’s Fool, players will normally use their skills, spells, and combat abilities against NPCs. When they attack an enemy, they make a draw based on their Hand or Ranged Attack score. If an enemy attacks them, they draw based on their Dodge or Parry. However, sometimes players will have occasion to work against each other or even attack each other directly. If a player attempts an action opposed by another player, the following simple set of rules apply.

The player that is the aggressor on each action makes the draw according to that player’s character’s skills and Fate structure. For example, a player would make a Hand Attack draw to hit another player with a sword. The other player would not draw based on their Dodge. If the attack is a success and is a Fortune Smiles for the attacking character, it deals damage as a Fortune Smiles regardless of what the card is for the character being attacked. If fate is twisted, the Fate Twists are resolved in the order in which they were declared.

This does not, however, mean that the abilities of the character being attacked are not a factor. Compare the stat the defending character would normally draw if being attacked by an NPC to the attacking character’s stat (Dodge vs. Hand Attack, for instance). If it is equal or lower, the attacking character makes a standard draw. If it is higher, the attacking character has a -2 penalty to the draw. If it is double or more, the attacking character must make a black double draw.

For example, suppose Rob’s character Ismara tries to sneak up on a fellow player character. Ismara has a Stealth of 6. If his target has a Perception of 6 or less, Rob makes a straight Stealth draw. If his target’s Perception is 7 through 11, Rob’s Stealth draw suffers a -2 penalty. If his target’s Perception is 12 or greater (unlikely!), Rob would black double draw at 6.

As we like to do from time to time, here's an update on what's going on and what's coming up for Pantheon Press

Fortune's Fool

Of course, our biggest news is that Fortune's Fool is on sale! We are immensely proud of how the game turned out, from the mechanics to the physical book itself. We couldn't be happier with the final product (with one or two minor exceptions; that's what errata are for). If you don't already have your copy, head on over to the Marketplace to get one. And if you do have a copy, why not tell your friends!

Pinocchio

Which leads to the fact that our Fortune's Fool introductory adventure is almost ready to go live. It'll be a PDF only product that will come free with your purchase of any Fortune's Fool book. (Don't worry, if you've already bought a book, we'll get you a copy.) It will also be available by itself for a few bucks if you really want to see Jay Stratton's twisted take on the beloved tale.

New Website Design

We'd like to thank Sandy and the rest of the good people over at Shiny Machine for all their hard work in giving this site a coat of spit and polish. Mostly polish. You're looking at it now, so you can see just how damn good it looks.

Game With Us at the Strat

On Saturday, October 2, we'll be running a few short games of Fortune's Fool at the Compleat Strategist in New York City. We'll be there all afternoon, so stop on by and see if we have a spot for you!

Now, as you may have seen on Facebook the other week, we're working on an introductory adventure for Fortune's Fool. It's a fun re-telling of the Pinocchio tale, and it'll be a nice fancy version of what we ran at GenCon, with everything you'll need to play. Everything except for a copy of the game itself, that is.

New York City, New York (July 16, 2010) – Pantheon Press LLC is proud to announce both the release of its hotly anticipated new role-playing game Fortune’s Fool and the nomination of Nobis: The City-States for Best Supplement in the 2010 ENnie Awards.

Fortune’s Fool is an innovative RPG that uses Tarot cards instead of dice. Set in a fantastic version of Renaissance Europe, the game allows you to play men, elves, dwarves, goblins, and more as they adventure from the courts of Paris to the canals of Venice. Fortune's Fool lets you create unique characters through an intuitive step-by-step process. Your character will be rich and detailed, and you will have your own unique luck structure. Using the new Fate Twist system, you can directly alter the course of battles, social interactions, and magic spells by manipulating the Tarot deck itself.

Fortune’s Fool is available for purchase at the Pantheon Press Marketplace as a PDF or one of two hardcopy editions: black & white and full color. Both feature the same stunning full-color cover illustrated by Christopher Kimball, but the interior art in the limited deluxe edition also comes in color. A free copy of the PDF also comes with the full-color edition.

“The announcement of Nobis: The City-States garnering a nomination for Best Supplement in the 2010 Ennie Awards alongside products from Hero Games and Wizards of the Coast makes us enormously proud,” said Rob Trimarco, President of Pantheon Press LLC. The Nobis: The City-States is a campaign setting for D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder that combines the best elements of immersive role-playing, high fantasy, and sophisticated political intrigue into one unified system.

To celebrate the nomination, Pantheon Press is selling many of the Nobis PDFs at a reduced price. Visit the Pantheon Press Marketplace for this special offer. Don’t forget to vote for Nobis: The City-States to win the ENnie for Best Supplement.

GenCon event registration went live Sunday at noon. I'm fairly certain the site crashed immediately after. I didn't see, as I was preparing to run the next session of our Fortune's Fool playtest (protip: don't get trampled by a speeding four-horse carriage). But when the game was over, I checked to see if anyone had signing up for our events.

And boy howdy, did they! Our Friday evening game sold out pretty quickly. Over the past two days, a couple of the others have also sold out. I guess it doesn't hurt to have your game promoted as "GenCon found this event interesting," eh? According to the site as of today, there are only 2 tickets left for the Friday afternoon game.

Maybe this is a glitch in the system, with people only wanting to buy a single ticket, but getting charged for several. Or, as I like to hope, Fortune's Fool is about to bust wide open!

If you didn't get a ticket, don't despair. It's been my experience that people buy tickets for conflicting issues and then decide what they want to do on the day. Stop on by the game anyway, there may be a slot open! Or perhaps we can schedule you for a demonstration of the game that's "off the books."

Ok, that sounded creepy. Sorry.

As this is the fooliest of days, we thought we'd give you an update on how Fortune's Fool is progressing and give you a little taste of what is to come!

The game has entered the final phase of playtesting, and by the end of this month we'll be beginning the production phase! If all goes according to plan, we will have actual books, ready to sell, at GenCon.

The Art
Our cover, and most of our interior art, is being done by Christopher Kimball, a talented gentleman who we met by chance and who happens to live in the neighborhood. We've taken quite a shine to the big lug, and are gaming with him regularly. That is, when he's not slaving over a hot sketch pad to produce us such pieces as this one:
The Tower

If you'd like to see more of Chris's art, visit his site or just wait for Fortune's Fool!

Of course, our good friend Andrew DeFelice is also contributing a few pieces, taking famous works of Renaissance art and giving them a fantasy twist!

The Fiction
As if writing a whole new set of rules wasn't enough, we've also been hard at work penning some short pieces of fiction set in the world of Fortune's Fool. Here's a sample from "Cleo's Duel," the tale that opens the book.

The chill morning wind slapped Cleo in the face. It made the throbbing in his head seem even worse. It was cold and misty but at least the rain had stopped. God, it’s early. Not even eight? A savage time to be awake.

Cleo stared through bleary eyes at his opponent across the green. It took a moment for the hangover clouds to part. When they did, Cleo saw a graceful figure warming up with a beautiful rapier. There was something glinting on the blade’s hilt, but Cleo could not quite make it out. What is that? The shape was blurry and took a moment to slide into focus. Ah yes, a noble crest. Marvelous. The figure moved lazily through some simple cuts and forms.

Then Cleo saw the pointed ears. This is too much! A miserable November morning and I am dueling not just a trained swordsman, not just a nobleman, but an ELF as well? Worse, Cleo had no recollection of why they were about to duel. Cleo turned to his second, his old friend from England. “Ashford, help me on this. Do we know that elf?” He pointed emphatically to guide his friend’s bleary eyes, “That one. Over there. Who seems intent on hurting me?”

Ashford stared and pursed his lips, trying to remember. He made a few ugly noises trying to find his voice and finally offered, “Ah…’tis an elf, Cleo…and noble by his look.”

Real progress. “Yes, I see that, Ashford. Do we remember why he wants to stick me with that pretty little sword?”

Ashford stared hard and furrowed his brow. His face was sheet white. He mopped his forehead with his kerchief, “There was…I think…a…ball?” No help here. While Cleo began removing his jacket Ashford was still struggling, “I remember… the dessert table!”

After a couple swallows of brandy (thank Christ), Cleo found himself on the field a few strides from his opponent. Cleo was amazed. How could the elf tower over him, yet still seem so light on his feet? This was turning serious. Time for some diplomacy.

“Noble sir, it is with deepest regrets that I offer up my heartfelt apologies for…for…for the many wrongs that have passed between us!” The elf’s face flickered with contempt, but his eyes never lost their icy stare. His second, an officer from the king’s guard, stepped forward and answered on the elf’s behalf, “You have publicly smeared the name of the Baronet’s sister. Your calumnies may not now be retracted because you have not the stomach for a fight. The Baronet’s honor must be satisfied!”

How will Cleo get out of this predicament? Or will he be skewered by the Baronet's blade? You can find out this August!

The Rules
Of course, this is a game we've been talking about. And no game is complete without rules!

Players in Fortune's Fool don't roll dice to see whether they succeed or fail, but instead all pull from a single Tarot deck called the Fate Deck in the game. But players also have the power to manipulate the Fate Deck to give them a better chance to succeed! Here's a glimpse at how that works:

Fate Twists
Fate is a capricious mistress. She will be kind one moment and cruel the next. Just when you come to depend on her, she will turn on you. But when she is on your side, everything falls into place!

Fate Twists allow you (the player) to manipulate the Fate Deck itself. Some twists allow you to look at upcoming cards or reshuffle the deck. Others let you play with cards face up or put certain Major Arcana near the top of the deck. Clever use of a Fate Twist will benefit not just you but your entire party.

Because Fate Twists are entirely a player action and not a character action, they take no time to perform. If you spend 5 minutes in the middle of a fight debating the use of a certain Fate Twist, no actual time passes in the game. They are something you the player do, and your character is uninvolved. You can twist fate as much and as often as you wish as long as you still have Fate Points in your Fate Pool.

Every time you twist fate, you must spend 1 Fate Point. Your Fate Pool refills after every session. For example, Rob’s goblin, Ismara, has 2 Fate Points and 3 Fate Twists. This means she can twist fate twice in a session. She does not have enough Fate Points to use all her twists in a single game session. After a play session, Ismara’s Fate Pool will refill to 2. Regardless of what Rob spends, Ismara will start the next session with 2 Fate Points in her pool.

But what are the specific Fate Twists? Read on:

Borrowed Trouble
If another character places a Major Arcanum in the Boneyard as a result of Fortune Weeps, and that card is a Fortune Shines for you, you may pick it up as a Fate Counter. Once the card is covered, this opportunity is gone.
Fat Chance
Take any Minor Arcana of your choice out of the boneyard and shuffle them back into the remaining Fate Deck.
Ill Omen
Wherever the Death card is, the gamemaster must find it and shuffle it into the top three cards.
Premonition
You may look at the next three cards in the Fate Deck and discard one. The gamemaster then shuffles remaining two and a third together and replaces them on top of deck. Keep this information to yourself.

That's about all for our preview of Fortune's Fool. We hope this has gotten you as excited to play the game as we have been making it!

Tyr "Tearbringer" Mal'dorr
There is but one rule in the goblinoid clans that populate the lands northeast of Emberstone—strength equals power. Until recently, this was exemplified best in the Mal’dorr (Goblin for ‘hidden knife’) clan, which was led by the hulking bugbear Molok. As strong as a minotaur with a command style to match, his clan survived, but never flourished. They barely fought back assaults from other goblinoid clans, and attacks on the nearby human settlements were almost always failures. On one such raid, a young hobgoblin named Tyr lost his eye. He also lost any respect he had for Molok.

Tyr believed that cleverness could be another form of strength, and therefore another form of power. Why announce your offense with a screaming charge when you could slip behind enemy lines under the cover of night and slit their throats while they slept. Both tactics had the same result, but the latter left you with far more of your own forces still alive. As he continued to watch Molok stumble blindly into battle, Tyr saw opportunities abound. A contingent of archers in the trees could take out the enemy before they were seen. A force hidden in a nearby cave could emerge after the battle was already joined to catch the
enemy from behind, and they would be crushed like an eyeball in a raven’s beak. Tyr’s mind was naturally suited for tactical combat.

Tyr knew that he couldn’t take Molok in hand-to-hand combat, so he devised a plan to wrest control of the clan from the bugbear. He had heard rumors of a poison dusk lizardfolk hermit living near the edge of Emberstone. On the pretense of scouting a strike against the Groo’bin clan, he sought out the lizardfolk. After several weeks of hard travel, he found the hermit and paid her a handsome sum to brew up a powerful toxin called “sapper.” The poison, which Tyr sprinkled into Molok’s food when he returned, was a subtle one. The next time Molok’s adrenaline flowed, he would be rendered as weak as a baby kobold.

After a few days of poisoning Molok to make sure it would take effect, Tyr called the bugbear out to the fire pit of their camp. Tyr challenged Molok’s authority, saying that he was no longer fit to lead the clan. Then, Molok punched Tyr right in the face, as he did to all would-be usurpers. Tyr knew this was coming, and though his jaw was broken, he managed to stay on his feet. He continued to taunt Molok, taking blow after blow, until each hit felt no stronger than a mother’s touch. That’s when Tyr drew a short blade and stabbed Molok right in the chest. He was nearly beaten to death, but he won leadership of the clan.

Tyr’s first campaign as chief of the Mal’dorr was against the human lumber camp of Oakstone. While his clan triumphed, killing all the humans, it was not without losses. Tyr lost three of his fiercest warriors and one of his fingers. He learned not to underestimate his enemies, even if they are just woodsmen with simple axes. Tyr made sure that one human escaped, and then set a trap for any retaliating forces amongst the deadly water-powered lumber saws. He and his clan lay in wait for over a week, despite many of the smaller goblins’ insisting on burning the entire camp to the ground. His patience paid off when a well-outfitted battalion entered the camp and set off the trap, leaving them wounded enough for the goblins to finish them off. The Mal’dorr ended that day with more spoils than they had seen in a generation.

Tyr repeated this stratagem at two other settlements, earning him the nickname "Tearbringer” among the humans, but while his goblins were quite happy with their growing hoard, Tyr felt like he was merely picking at scraps. He knew there was greater plunder to be had closer to the human’s City-States Region where trade prospered. One night, he gave his clan a choice. They could leave all the treasure they accumulated behind and join him in his travels, or remain and forfeit the greater glory of future conquests. The Mal’dorr split in half that evening, but Tyr felt no ill will to those he left behind; the goblin mind doesn’t accept change quickly.

Tyr and his remaining clan moved northwest, sneaking their way past Bergen and into the hills flanking the Bergen Pass. When they were almost run down by a speeding carriage moving along the trade routes there, the Tearbringer feared he had gotten himself in over his head. In an attempt to even the odds, Tyr and his goblins began a search for their own mounts. They were naturally drawn to the large wolf-like worgs that populated the hills. Smarter than the average predator, Tyr knew they could not simply be captured and trained.

He found a smaller pack and approached them diplomatically, with offerings of raw deer meat. To his surprise, the oldest worg spoke Goblin, and the two found that they were of the same mind. They quickly entered into an arrangement beneficial to both sides: Tyr’s goblins would ride the worgs, while the worgs would get a steady supply of food from successful raids.

The hobgoblin and his new clan then launched a campaign of terror, striking against the caravans of goods and money within the Bergen Pass. Tyr soon became known as the bandit king of the hills, and his reputation as the Tearbringer spread. They usually hit the wagons carrying gold toward the mining settlement of Gunpowder, with the worg riders blocking the route while Tyr and his second-in-command, a bugbear barbarian named Dox, closed in from behind. Seeing the fearsome goblinoids, most simply surrendered their cargo, and the few that have survived a fight with Tyr’s clan tell stories that help to fuel that fear. While they usually use traditional weapons, Tyr’s clan is close to mastering the use of firearms. If they do so, they might be unstoppable.

Tyr is a particularly cunning hobgoblin. He is tall, but not gaunt, and agile, but not slight. Tyr’s body is a network of scars that cover burnt orange skin. His long hair is almost black with tinges of red, and he usually keeps it in a ponytail. He wears an eye patch over his missing left eye, and the rest of his clothing is functional warrior’s garb. He wields a notched scimitar in close combat, commanding his minions into flanking positions to gain advantage. His typical raiding party consists of six goblins riding worgs, Dox, and himself.

The only thing we love more than making games is playing them. Whiskey is definitely in the top three as well, but we do a lot more game playing than whiskey drinking. Usually. And since we were good friends before we were business partners, we play a lot of games together. Here's what we, and our other friends, are up to right now:

Mutants & Masterminds--Last month, I started running a short superhero campaign set in the game's default Freedom City setting. The players are new or second-string superheroes. They're a motley crew that includes a descendant of the Red Baron, a professional wrestler, a guilt-ridden guitar player who can't die, a tech in a supersuit designed for disaster rescue, and a kappa (a Japanese water spirit). So far they've faced off against a giant flea, a giant frog, and a Goth chick who turns into blood.

Fortune's Fool--Of course, we're also playtesting our next game. And, of course, Jay is running it. Once we finish rescuing a young Mozart from the enchanted world of the Magic Flute, we'll probably start another short campaign as a final round of playtesting.

Pathfinder RPG--This game hasn't fully started yet, as the group still has to play the final session of a long-running Eberron campaign before we start this one. But the other night, our Eberron GM got sick, so I told Rob and Andrew to make characters. My plan is to run through Paizo's Council of Thieves adventure path over the next year or so, using many of our own feats from Nobis. Being that the campaign takes place mostly in the shadow-haunted and devil-controlled city of Westcrown, many of our Nobis feats fit right in. Plus, it's a chance to finally try the Pathfinder RPG!

Those are the big three, though we occasionally dip our wicks into Star Wars: The Saga Edition and Dungeons & Dragons 4e when our friends run them.

So what are you playing?

As we've mentioned before, we'll be at NYC's the Compleat Strategist tomorrow afternoon for our big official introduction of Nobis. And while you're there, you can participate in the Competition of the Spirit, the annual tournament that pits fencers from all regions against one another. Choose a fencer from our list of pregens and go a couple of rounds against another fencer of our choice. Will you be victorious or will you suffer a humiliating defeat? You won't know unless you show up!

If you're a user of NYC's mass transit system, the lines will be a little weird this weekend, so give yourself some extra time to get there.

As we mentioned last week, our next book, Adversaries Almanac will be available on our store in the next few weeks. To pique your curiosity, we present an excerpt from the entry on "Emperor" Naron, a twisted sewer dweller who calls the vermin there his subjects. With art courtesy of Jesse Cutler. Enjoy!

EMPEROR NARON
The Naron family was blessed. Vodon Naron, head of the household and husband to Jelina Naron, was a very successful local politician. Many a district prospered under his fair representation. Jelina, daughter of a very influential shipping guild family, was an accomplished poet and artist whose works sold for not a tiny sum of money. When they were married their families rejoiced. What a great success this union would be! Truly their future was bright! They had three children all within a year of each other and all boys: Jerro, Piotr and Lorin. Jerro grew very tall and strong and aspired to be part of the military. Piotr was very smart and had a fierce curiosity for all things written. Then there was Lorin. He was...quiet. Lorin had no special skills or even had any ambitions to pursue any sort of career. Although his parents were very successful and his brothers were all coming along, Lorin never truly excelled. He was just not a part of the success of the Naron family. He seemed to choose not to succeed even when given every opportunity to do so. His parents and brothers were very disappointed in him. They told him so almost every day.

His studies were average at best. He had no desire to spend much time with any friends and it took monumental effort just to get him to speak to even his own family. But there were some things he did spend time with. When his family was hosting a garden party on their estate Lorin was often found in his family’s cellar feeding the rats, millipedes, and other vermin. After the family took a day trip to visit relatives, Lorin showed up at the coach dirty, stained, and smelling of dirt. This childhood phase became more and more of an obsession. Eventually he took to sneaking into the cellar to sleep, leaving the comfort of his opulent bedroom for the cold, musty dampness of the place he felt the most comfortable.

His brothers would tease him incessantly. They and their friends would sometimes find him outside under a tree petting and talking to an insect. When Lorin saw them coming he shooed the creature away and just sat there huddled with his arms wrapped around his knees as the taunts, punches, and pokes came. Eventually they would get bored and leave him. When he would return home, his mother naturally chided him for his being dirty and again banished him to his room after he got a painful scrubbing from her. Then the lecture from his father came. Again. As it always did. Speaking of success and how blessed he and his mother were and how his brothers showed great promise.

One day, things changed for Lorin and not in a very good way. As he was at a picnic with his family and relatives, he walked away from their spot and found a good-sized snail slowly inching across the roots of a large tree. He had a piece of bread with him that he crushed and moistened in a puddle nearby and placed it near the snail to see if he would perhaps enjoy eating it. Lorin sat near the creature against the tree to watch it. It was slow but it eventually reached the bread that was laid in its path and it slowly oozed onto it. Lorin, happy that his new friend was eating, relaxed and started to drift off to sleep in the cool shade of the tree. He was not asleep long when he awoke to a crunch. His brother Jerro stood over him, smiling. Piotr was not far behind, laughing so hard he was doubled over. Jerro lifted his foot and Lorin saw the crushed snail. Its greenish gray insides dripping down the root of the tree. Jerro quickly wiped his shoe on Lorin’s jacket as he sat in shocked despair. “Here is your friend, Lorin. You can keep him close to your heart, now.” Lorin looked down at the dripping ooze on his jacket then at the crunched snail shell, then at his cruel brothers laughing at him. Lorin, for the first time ever, stood up for himself. He launched furiously at Jerro, taking him off his guard and knocking him back onto the ground. Lorin punched and throttled his older brother with a fierceness no one ever though him capable. Piotr, shocked, tried to pull him off but Lorin would not be budged. As Jerro screamed, Piotr ran to tell the family. His father ran over and pulled Lorin off of his crying bloodied brother.

Incensed, his father slapped Lorin across the face. “You have disgraced your family for the last time!” He marched everyone abruptly away, ending the picnic, and headed home. When they arrived late in the evening, the servants had already gone home. As his wife tended to the injured Jerro, Vodon was alone in his study with Lorin. He told him that he would be notifying the headmaster at the military academy that Lorin would be their newest student. He was going to send Lorin away to be taught discipline and proper behavior. Come the morning, Lorin would no longer be a burden on his family and he will be whipped into shape by the sternest tutor in the academy.

As Lorin sat there, hearing his father scream and screech about sending him away he felt oddly soothed by a feeling of cold peace. He could have sworn he could hear chittering, scratching, and squeaking. What was even odder his father heard it too and looked around. As his father peered into his fireplace the sounds got louder and louder until a wave of rats, insects and other vermin vomited forth from the fireplace. Then from cracks in the floorboards. Then bubbling up from the first floor windows. They swarmed over Lorin’s father as he screamed and slapped at them uselessly. Lorin watched as their tiny mouths tore pieces from his father’s clothes and flesh, he stared as tiny stingers and mandibles pierced his father’s flesh and injected him with venoms a thousand times. Still feeling a cold sense of calm, Lorin stood up and listened. A cacophony of buzzing and squeaking among the sounds of muffled screams emanating from the vermin-choked mouths of his entire family filled the Naron home. His mother and brothers met the same fate as his father. He smiled a wicked smile as the swarms finished their work and, as if in celebration crawled to Lorin and amassed at his feet and simultaneously buzzed, clacked, clicked and squeaked as if cheering and paying respect to their lord and master. Among the carpet of vermin were two huge dire rats who placed tokens at his feet. They were somewhat crude but were adorned with the markings of Oloren, the Blackened. He was still laughing as he left his home forever, the bloody, swollen bodies of his family left in tortured death poses.

It's been over a month since we lost our good friend and colleague Jason Amsler, and we've had some time to pick up the pieces and begin the process of continuing in his absence. Remember folks, to cherish the friends with you game with, and if you are struggling to find people with which to share this hobby we all love, there are plenty of websites out there for just such a thing! Get on it and go play!

As for Pantheon Press news, we've got a sack of it right here.

Our next product will be the Adversaries Almanac, a collection of villains of all kinds for your Nobis campaign. From lowly vermin mages to powerful blackguards, the Adversaries Almanac will be your primary source for antagonists. We will most likely publish this book as a PDF only (unless the public clamors for a hardcopy) before October is over. Keep an eye on pantheonpress.com for the final date!

Also, within the next week or so, we will put up a FREE brief conversion document to make your Nobis: The City-States book compatible with Paizo's Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. We know that Paizo's successor to 3.5 is the hottest thing around these days, and we want to make sure your Nobis books can be integrated smoothly into that system.

Looking further down the line, we have just begun putting pen to paper for our very first ALL ORIGINAL game. It's called Fortune's Fool and it uses a Tarot deck instead of dice and that's all you're going to get out of us for now.

Finally, and most importantly, the Pantheon lads are going to be at NYC's Compleat Strategist store on Saturday Oct. 10 for an official unveiling of Nobis to the public. The event starts at 1:00 p.m. There will be demos and discussions. One of our artists, Andrew DeFelice will also be on hand to showcase his talent. And if you are good, there will be pizza. So if you're in the New York City area, come on by and say hello!

We have sent out our gaming store promotional copies (except a few to Canada - which I will try to ship out in the coming weeks) and are hopeful that their patrons will enjoy a new world to adventure in for their D and D 3.5 campaigns.

Next down the pike will be a free to download Pathfinder RPG compatibility document! We are inspired by Paizo and their dedication to the 3.5 fans in creating this new and improved rules set that advances the 3.5 mechanics without wiping the slate clean and invalidating our D and D 3.5 gaming bookshelves.

So once we dot the i's and cross the t's of the Pathfinder RPG compatibility license we'll post it up and include it as a hardcopy insert on all future order fulfillment for Nobis books.

Thanks for being a fan!

Note! Some copies of the "Nobis: The City States" book went out with some errant binding glue on the back cover that may affect the last page of the book. If you received one of these email us at sales@pantheonpress.com and we'll ship replacements to you free of charge

Tragic News
August 10th, 2009

Last week, Pantheon Press lost its president and founding member, Jason Amsler, to an unexpected tragedy. This, combined with a miscommunication with our printer and our involvement in GenCon, means that we will be shipping the copies of our books to you much later than we had hoped (likely in mid September). Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time, and we hope that you will be interested in doing business with us in the near future. Jason Amsler was a great friend and colleague and we will be continuing with Pantheon Press and putting more material out for the world he helped to create in the near future.

In the meantime, if you happen to be attending GenCon, if you’d like to meet us, please contact me during the con by email (rob.trimarco@pantheonpress.com) or leave me a message at 1-800-522-6695 ext. 2612. We are running Nobis games on Friday and Saturday, and we’ll be hanging out with our fellow gamers all weekend long. We’d love to hear from you.

Jason K. and Jason A. were interviewed at Planewalker.com!

Planewalker.com speaks:

"While tooling around the internet the other day I ran across a very brief preview of a new DND setting called Nobis. Now it seems as thought every troglodyte and his brother has a campaign setting out, and rarely is there any huge mark of distinction readily visible. In this case that was not so, the thing that jumped out at me right of was the big friendly "3.5" on the the image. That's right, two months before Pathfinder's Alpha release and a mere half year or so after the contentious advent of 4th Edition these brave souls are doing a v3.5 setting!"
